Shifting Smile? How Our Oral Health Changes As We Get Older
Come See Us For Your Consultation! No Referral Necessary!
As you get older, you will start to notice small changes to your smile and teeth. Although normal, it’s important to understand the difference between healthy changes and a cause for concern. At Beach Braces, we believe that knowledge is key to owning your oral health. Let’s take a look at the most common reasons people experience a shifting smile with age, and what you can do to fix it!
Changes That Come With Age
As we become older, our faces gradually change in shape and proportion. You may notice your jaw becoming more narrow, and your lower jaw growing more forward. As this impacts your jaw and bite, it can cause your smile to look a little different. Crowding of teeth is also a common symptom of growing older, as progressive narrowing of the jaw means less room for your existing teeth.
It’s important to share these concerns with Dr. Dask. If you notice changes that aren’t making you happy, we can create a custom plan to give you a beautiful smile at any age. When you are in our office, we can discuss a variety of treatments that suit your lifestyle, and before you know it, your youthful smile will be back in no time!
Wear And Tear
From years of use, you will start to notice signs of wear and tear on your teeth. As the enamel becomes worn on the tooth’s surface, the tissue underneath called “dentin” will become more exposed, and cause your teeth to look more yellow.
It’s important to call our office if you notice your gums receding. Although this is one of the natural changes with aging, it can be cause for concern if it is due to periodontal disease. This means loss of bone and support for the teeth, which could cause gums to recede even more, or teeth drifting “all of a sudden”. Periodontal disease can cause loosening of teeth, or even loss of teeth completely if not handled by a professional.
