Why Is It Important?

When you follow the proper steps to maintain your braces, you’re doing your smile a big favour! Following proper dental hygiene is key for keeping your mouth clean, as food can get trapped between your braces and teeth. The longer the food sits there, the greater risk you’ll be at for developing cavities. One of the worst risks of improper hygiene during orthodontic treatment is the development of decalcification (white marks, or white-spot lesions) that is practically permanent once it occurs, but preventable if you play by the rules.

The usual braces problems are also preventable. A “broken” bracket (when a bracket comes off the tooth accidentally) or a loose wire may not only be irritating in your mouth, but will also delay your results. If you experience any of these issues, it’s important to call the office as soon as possible!

Easy Steps To Follow

When you have braces, it’s important to avoid hard foods as it can lead to broken brackets. Popcorn, nuts and ice cubes are some of the worst offenders. Typically, anything that is crunchy, sticky, or chewy should be avoided! Consistency is also key to having a successful treatment. Rubber bands or “elastics” need to be worn as recommended by your orthodontist as they apply additional force and help guide the movement of the teeth, speeding up the process.

As food can get stuck between your braces, flossing is essential at least once per day, to make sure nothing gets left behind! You may also want to consider a Waterpik, which makes the process of cleaning in between the teeth easier. It’s recommended you brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time. This way you’ll always know your smile is looking fresh!
