“It’s a well-known fact that if you want your teeth to remain straight after

orthodontic treatment, you’re going to need to wear your retainers”

 Retainer Instructions

  • Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. You may also have a little more saliva in your mouth. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
  • Take your retainers out when eating, and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
  • Clean retainers thoroughly once a day. Soak them in warm but not hot water with a retainer cleansing tablet (like Polident® or Efferdent®) and then brush them with your toothbrush (no toothpaste) and rinse them with plenty of water. Polident Fresh Cleanse® foam is an excellent product to use for brushing the retainer instead of toothpaste.
  • When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care.
  • If your retainer stops fitting, of if you lose or break it, please call us immediately! Teeth may shift very rapidly during the first few months after the braces have been removed!!
  • Pets love retainers, so make sure to keep them away from Fido!
  • Remove retainers when eating, brushing your teeth, when playing sports, or when swimming in the pool.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
  • Retainer replacements can be expensive, but with proper care they will last for years! If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or if your retainers need adjusting, please call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
