With your new braces, you’ll be undergoing a lot of new changes. One of the most important is the change in your eating habits. You won’t be able to eat all of the same foods you may have enjoyed prior to your new orthodontic treatment. However, modifying your diet is essential as you embark on your journey to a new smile!

For the first few days after you have had your braces put on, it is normal to have some minor discomfort. During the first few days we suggest that you eat softer foods that won’t harm your braces and won’t increase the sensitivity to your mouth or teeth. You can try soup, pudding, yogurt, well cooked pasta and boiled soft vegetables. Soft fruits (e.g. bananas, mangoes or melons) are also ok. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and brush after every meal!

Always cut apples, carrots or other crunchy healthy snacks into small pieces that can be easily chewed. You can enjoy hard fruits by preparing them into shakes or smoothies. Avoid foods that can break or loosen braces such as hard candy, crunchy and sticky foods. Stay away from nuts, beef jerky, bubble gum and pop corn, and do not chew on ice cubes! Finally, remember that foods with high acid or high sugar content (oranges, pineapples, pickles, sport drinks, or sodas) can damage the enamel of your teeth and develop cavities when frequently consumed over a prolonged period of time. Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your future! Be responsible so you can enjoy and show off your smile for a lifetime!
